E24 on a Bosch dishwasher means it is not draining properly, and Bosch names a blocked drain filter as the cause. Bosch’s checks: a kinked hose, the siphon connection, a loose pump cover under the filter, and, if a garbage disposal was just installed, the disposal’s knockout plug. Clean the filter, clear those, then reset. If E24 returns, call Bosch.

Bosch lists the symptoms too: water pooling in the bottom after the cycle, the dishwasher pausing or stopping unexpectedly, and gurgling or humming.

E24 and E25 together

Code What Bosch says What to check
E24 Not draining properly; drain filter blocked Filter, hoses, siphon connection, pump cover, disposal plug
E25 Drain pump blocked, or pump cover loose or missing Filter out, pump cover, debris in the pump well
E22 Filter blocked Wash the filter, then the same drain checks
E23 Drain pump blocked, clogged or faulty Pump cover and pump well; Bosch support if it persists

Newer Bosch models show drain faults as E:61-03, E:92-40, E:61-02 or E:90-01 instead, according to the owner’s manual for the SPE53B55UC. The checks are the same.

Step 1: clean the filters

Safety

Bosch’s manual says to disconnect the power before you work in the pump area. Unplug the dishwasher or switch off its breaker. Take care with broken glass in the bottom of the tub.

  1. Remove the lower rack.
  2. Twist out the filter assembly in the bottom of the tub and lift it out.
  3. Wash it under running water with mild soap and a soft brush, as Bosch’s code page describes.
  4. Refit it until it locks.

Step 2: check the pump cover

Under the filter is a small cover over the drain pump. Bosch’s E24 page says to check that it is not loose; its E25 page shows how to take it off and clear the pump:

  1. With the filter out, scoop any standing water out with a sponge.
  2. Pry the cover up with a spoon until it clicks, pull it upward until you feel resistance, then pull it forward to remove it.
  3. Remove food, glass and anything else around the impeller.
  4. Refit the cover and press it down until it clicks.

A cover that is loose or missing is an E25 cause in itself.

Step 3: hoses and the disposal

  • Hoses. Bosch says to check the hose is not kinked or damaged. Its code list adds the drain hose and air gap: disconnect the drain hose, place the end in a bucket, clear any debris, reconnect it and test with a rinse cycle.
  • Siphon connection. Bosch says to check the connection to the drain under the sink and make sure it is open; the newer manual says a sealed siphon connection must be opened.
  • Garbage disposal. If the dishwasher drains through a new disposal, make sure the knockout plug was removed from the disposal’s dishwasher inlet.

Step 4: reset, then call

Reset the dishwasher as your owner’s manual describes. Bosch’s newer manual: switch off, unplug or switch off the breaker, wait at least 2 minutes, restore power and switch on. If E24 or E25 comes back with a clean filter, a seated pump cover and clear hoses, Bosch says to contact its customer service.

If a technician confirms a failed drain pump, match the part to your model number. Bosch puts the rating plate inside the door (how to read it).

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between E24 and E25 on a Bosch dishwasher?

Bosch says E24 means the dishwasher is not draining properly because the drain filter is blocked, while E25 means the drain pump is blocked or its cover is loose or missing. The checks overlap: clean the filters, make sure the pump cover clicks closed, and check the drain hose.

Why does my new Bosch dishwasher show E24?

If it drains into a garbage disposal, Bosch says to check that the knockout plug was removed from the disposal's dishwasher inlet. A disposal installed with the plug still in place leaves the dishwasher nowhere to drain.

How do I reset a Bosch dishwasher after E24?

Bosch's E24 page says to reset the dishwasher as described in the owner's manual, after clearing the cause. Bosch's newer manuals say to switch off, unplug or turn off the breaker, wait at least 2 minutes, then restore power.
