Each Samsung appliance type has its own codes, and Samsung often shows one fault with several codes depending on the model. The common ones: 4C (water not getting in), 5C (not draining), SUd (too many suds) and Ub (unbalanced) on washers; LC (a leak) on dishwashers; and on refrigerators, fan and power codes such as 22E.
Every page here is written from Samsung’s US support pages, which are listed as sources so you can read Samsung’s wording. Pick your appliance.

Samsung’s code families
Samsung’s washer code page does not list one code per fault. It lists families, and the code you see depends on the model:
- Water supply: 4C, 1 4C, nF or 4E all mean water is not entering correctly.
- Drain: nd, 5E, SE, 5C, SC or 1 5C all mean water is not draining as it should.
- Suds: SUd, 5UD, Sd, 5d, SUdS or 5Ud5 all mean too many suds.
- Balance: dc, Ub, U6, Ur, UE, 1 Ub or 1U6 all mean an unbalanced load.
Two traps are worth knowing. dc means an unbalanced load on some Samsung washers and an open door on others. And on a segment display, a 5 and an S look almost the same, which is why Samsung lists SUd and 5Ud side by side. When in doubt, Samsung’s advice is to check the manual for your model number (where to find it).
Samsung washer error codes
The four washer families above are the Samsung washer codes you are most likely to meet, and all four start with checks outside the cabinet. For water in, that means the hoses and valves; for water out, the drain hose and, on front-load models, the pump filter; for suds and balance, the detergent and the load. Three have their own page: 4C, SUd and Ub. The Samsung washer code list has every family in one table, door and leak codes included, along with the motor and heater codes that go to service.
Two Samsung washer codes are not faults at all. SUd pauses the cycle so the suds can settle, and Samsung says it does not mean service is needed. 4C2 means the hot and cold hoses are swapped; Samsung says it does not mean service is needed either.

Samsung dishwasher error codes
LC or LE on a Samsung dishwasher means the leak sensor has detected moisture. Samsung says the dishwasher then turns itself on and will not turn off, so unplug it before you check anything. Excess detergent is a common cause; Samsung notes detergent dries more slowly than water. See Samsung dishwasher LC. Samsung’s other dishwasher codes include 4C or 4E (not enough water pressure or temperature), 5C or 5E (drain) and HE (heater).
Samsung refrigerator error codes
Samsung refrigerator codes cover fans (21E, 22E), sensors (5E, 8E, 14E), the ice maker (33E, 39E, 40E), the compressor (84C) and the power supply (83E, 85E, 86E). Samsung asks owners not to unplug the refrigerator or press buttons to clear a code unless the code’s instructions say to, because the technician needs to read it. If the display shows OF OF and the fridge is warm, it is in Cooling Off mode, not broken. See Samsung refrigerator codes.
Reading a Samsung display

Samsung’s codes are drawn in segments, like a digital clock, and some letters only exist as look-alikes. That is why Samsung lists pairs such as SUd and 5Ud, OE and 0E, or SE and 5E as the same code.
A few tips from Samsung’s pages:
- Write down every character, including a leading 1 (1 4C, 1 Ub): some models put a number in front.
- Check for blinking lights on models without a display; Samsung’s washer and dishwasher pages list the light patterns.
- Do not clear the code first. Samsung’s dishwasher page asks you to troubleshoot before resetting.
When a part is the answer
Samsung’s steps usually end with “request service” rather than a named part. Where a part does come into it, the usual suspects match the code family: a water inlet valve for a fill code that will not clear, a drain pump for a drain code with a clean filter, a door seal for a dishwasher leak you can see, and a genuine water filter on the refrigerator every six months. In every case the part has to match your model number, and anything inside the cabinet is a technician job.
Safe checks, and where they stop
Safety
Unplug a washer or dishwasher before you open a filter or check under it. If there is water on the floor, switch off the appliance’s circuit first. Never open the cabinet, the control board, a refrigerator’s sealed cooling system or a gas connection. When a code returns after Samsung’s checks, Samsung’s step is to request service.
Before you call, write down the exact code and the model and serial number from the label (where to find it). Add what you have already tried, in order, and whether the code shows on every cycle or only some. A technician who knows all of that can often bring the right part on the first visit. If a technician names a part, the model number decides which one fits.
Error codes on other appliance brands
The same letters can mean something different on another brand: OE is an overfill code on Samsung washers but a drain code on LG washers. See LG, Bosch or Whirlpool.
Frequently asked questions
Why do Samsung appliances have so many codes for the same problem?
Samsung uses different codes on different models and displays. Its washer code page groups them into families, such as 4C, 4E, nF and 1 4C for one water supply fault, and says to check the user manual where a code means different things on different models.
Should I reset a Samsung appliance as soon as a code appears?
Note the code first. Samsung's dishwasher code page asks you not to reset or clear a code before troubleshooting, and its refrigerator page asks you not to unplug or press buttons to make a code go away unless the instructions say to.
Do Samsung washer and dishwasher codes mean the same thing?
Some letters overlap but the faults are specific to each appliance. 4C is a water supply code on both, and LC is a leak code on both, but each appliance has its own code list and its own checks.
