Bosch dishwasher codes fall into groups. E22 to E25 are drain codes with home checks: clean the filter, make sure the pump cover clicks shut, and clear the drain hose. E15 means water in the base; Bosch says to turn off the water and call. Heater, pump and control codes such as E01, E04 and E09 need service.
The meanings below are from Bosch’s US dishwasher code list. Newer Bosch models show codes in a different format, such as E:61-03, covered at the end.

| E04 | Faulty heater electronics found in the self-test | Call support |

The drain codes: E22 to E25
Four of Bosch’s codes come down to the same path: the filter in the bottom of the tub, the drain pump under it, and the hose to the sink drain. Bosch’s checks, in order:
- Remove the filter and wash it under running water with mild soap and a soft brush.
- Check the drain pump cover under the filter. Bosch’s E25 page shows how to remove it with a spoon, clear the pump well and press it back until it clicks.
- Check the drain hose for kinks, and the air gap or hose for debris. Bosch says to disconnect the drain hose, put the end in a bucket, clear it, reconnect it and test with a rinse cycle.
- If the dishwasher drains into a new garbage disposal, check that the disposal’s knockout plug was removed.
- Reset the dishwasher and run a rinse cycle.
The step-by-step version, with photos and the reset, is on the E24 page.

E15 is the code that worries people most, and Bosch’s answer is the simplest: the safety switch has found water in the base, the leakage protection has activated, so turn off the water inflow and call Bosch customer support. Bosch gives no home fix and does not advise tilting the dishwasher; its manual says to keep the dishwasher upright when it is moved. See Bosch E15.
Heater, pump and control codes
E01, E04 and E09 point at the heat pump, the heater or the control board, which are inside the appliance and wired to the mains. For E01 and E09, Bosch says to reset power at the breaker for 30 seconds and call support if the code returns. E12 is the exception with a home step: Bosch says limescale has built up and to use Bosch descaler, with softening salt to stop it coming back.
Safety
Switch off the power before you lift out the filter or the pump cover; Bosch’s manual says to disconnect the dishwasher before cleaning the pump. Watch for broken glass in the pump well. Never open the control panel or the base of the dishwasher.
Newer Bosch codes
Newer Bosch dishwashers show codes with a colon and a dash. From the owner’s manual for the SPE53B55UC:
- E:30-00, E:31-00: water protection system activated. Turn off the faucet, then call customer service. E:34-00: water running in continuously; the same steps.
- E:32-00: water supply problem: a kinked inlet hose, the faucet turned off, or a blocked filter in the supply or AquaStop hose.
- E:61-03, E:92-40, E:61-02, E:90-01: water not draining: the same filter, hose, siphon and pump cover checks as E24.
- E:20-60: heating element calcified; descale.
For any other code, the manual says to switch off, unplug or switch off the breaker, wait at least 2 minutes, restore power and switch on, then call customer service with the code if it returns.

Keeping drain codes away
Most Bosch drain codes start at the filter, so the habit that prevents them is the same one that clears them. Scrape food off plates before loading, take the filter out and rinse it now and then, and check that the pump cover is still clicked in place when you do. After any work under the sink, check that the drain hose has not been pushed into a kink behind the cabinet.
Frequently asked questions
How do I reset a Bosch dishwasher error code?
For several codes, Bosch's US code list says to reset power at the breaker for 30 seconds and call support if the code returns. Bosch's newer manual describes a fuller reset: switch off, unplug or turn off the breaker, wait at least 2 minutes, restore power and switch on. Fix the cause first, or the code comes back.
What does E22 mean on a Bosch dishwasher?
Bosch says E22 means the filter is blocked. Wash it under running water with mild soap and a soft brush, check that the drain pump cover is clicked in place, check the drain hose for kinks, and clear the air gap or drain hose of debris.
Why does my Bosch dishwasher show E:61-03 instead of E24?
Newer Bosch models use a different code format. The SPE53B55UC manual lists E:61-03 as water not drained off, with the same causes as E24: dirty filters, a blocked or kinked drain hose, a sealed siphon connection, a loose pump cover or a blocked pump.
