LG Error Codes: Washer, Dryer and Dishwasher Codes Explained

What the error codes on LG washers, dryers and dishwashers mean, LG's first checks for each, which codes need a technician, and how to find your model.

LG washers, dryers and dishwashers each have their own codes. On washers, OE means the water cannot drain, UE an unbalanced load and IE no water coming in. On dryers, d80 to d95 mean a blocked exhaust vent. On dishwashers, AE is a leak and OE a drain fault. Most have safe first checks; LG sends repeat codes to service.

How to read an LG code

LG displays are small, and a few characters look alike. Three things help:

  • Upper and lower case can matter. On top-load washers, LG says a lowercase uE means the washer is still trying to balance the load, while an uppercase UE means it has stopped and needs you.
  • Newer models use numbers. LG’s newer front-load list pairs letter codes with E-numbers, such as E03 or E21 for a drain fault. The fix is the same.
  • One code can differ by model. AE is a leak code on LG front-load washers and dishwashers, but LG’s top-load washer list groups AE with LE as a rotation error. Check whether your washer loads from the front or the top before you read further.

The codes you are most likely to see

Washers

OE, UE and IE are the LG washer codes you are most likely to meet. All three start with checks you can make without tools: the drain hose and drain pump filter for OE, the load and leveling for UE, and the water supply for IE. LE is a motor code; after a rest and a lighter load, it goes to service. The LG washer code list has every code in one table.

Dryers

LG’s d75, d80, d90 and d95 codes report how restricted the exhaust is: 75, 80, 90 or 95 percent. That is a safety warning as much as a performance one. The U.S. Fire Administration’s report on home dryer fires found failure to clean was the leading factor. On gas models, LG adds that d80 can mean too little gas is reaching the dryer, which is a job for a qualified technician. See LG dryer vent codes.

Dishwashers

AE (a leak or overfill), OE (not draining), IE (no water) and bE (too many suds) are the LG dishwasher codes with home checks: dishwasher detergent only and a clean filter every one or two weeks, plus straight hoses with the water valve open. The sensor and heater codes tE and HE go to service, as do LE and PE. See LG dishwasher error codes.

Most LG codes start with water or air

Look across LG’s code lists and a pattern shows. The codes with home fixes are nearly all about something getting in or out:

  • Water in: IE on washers and dishwashers. Faucets and hoses first, then the inlet filters.
  • Water out: OE on washers and dishwashers. The drain hose and the filter in front of the pump.
  • Air out: d75 to d95 on dryers. The lint screen first, then the duct and the outside hood.
  • Foam: Sud on washers and bE on dishwashers. Too much detergent, or the wrong kind.

The codes without a home fix are about parts inside the cabinet, such as the motor or a heater.

That pattern is useful when a code is not on any list you can find. When water or air is involved, or detergent, the checks outside the cabinet come first. Otherwise it is a restart, then service.

Before you buy a part

LG’s own steps rarely end with “replace this part”. They end with “request service” once the checks outside the cabinet are done. When a part is the answer, such as a drain pump that no longer hums or a cracked lint screen, the part number has to match your model. Two LG washers that look the same can take different pumps, so read the model number off the label first and match it to the listing or the parts diagram for that model.

Safe checks, and where they stop

Safety

Turn the appliance off and unplug it before you open a filter or panel; LG’s own steps for the washer drain filter start that way. Never open the cabinet, the control panel, a gas connection or a sealed refrigeration system. If water is on the floor near an appliance that is plugged in, switch off its circuit before you walk into it.

LG’s home steps are all outside the cabinet: hoses, filters you can reach from the front, the load in the drum, the vent run, and a restart. Each code page ends at the point where LG says to request service. That line is there because the next step means mains wiring, a motor, a heater or, on gas dryers, the gas supply.

Before you call LG or a technician

Write down:

  1. the exact code (upper and lower case can matter),
  2. the model and serial number from the label (where it is),
  3. what you have already tried, in order,
  4. whether the code appears every cycle or only with some loads.

That saves a diagnostic visit time, and if a part is needed, the model number is what decides which one fits.

Error codes on other appliance brands

Other brands write their own codes, and the same letters can mean something else on another brand: OE is a drain code on LG washers but an overfill code on Samsung washers. Go to Samsung, Bosch or Whirlpool for theirs.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find what my LG error code means?

LG publishes code lists for its front-load washers, top-load washers, dryers and dishwashers on its US support site, and in each model's owner's manual. This site's LG pages are written from those lists and link to each one in their sources.

Does unplugging an LG appliance clear the error code?

Often the display clears, and for some codes LG's first step is exactly that: unplug, wait between 10 seconds and 5 minutes depending on the code, and restart. If the cause is still there, the code returns, and LG then sends you to service.

Are LG washer and dryer codes the same?

No. The washer and dryer have separate code lists. The dryer's d75, d80, d90 and d95 codes are about exhaust airflow, while washer codes such as OE, UE and IE are about water and balance.
