LG Dryer d80, d90 and d95 Codes: Clearing a Blocked Vent

What d75, d80, d90 and d95 mean on an LG dryer, LG's four places to check the vent, the duct LG says to use, and why a blocked vent is a fire risk.

LG dryerd80

On an LG dryer, d75, d80, d90 and d95 mean the exhaust duct is clogged: LG says the number is how restricted the airflow is, 75 to 95 percent. Clear it in LG’s order: empty the lint screen, check the duct behind the dryer, check the outside vent flap, then have the vent in the wall cleaned.

The code comes from LG’s Flow Sense system, which watches the exhaust airflow. LG says two or four bars on the Flow Sense indicator also mean the exhaust is severely restricted.

Safety

A blocked dryer vent is a fire risk, not only a slow dryer. The U.S. Fire Administration’s report on home clothes dryer fires found failure to clean was the leading factor. On a gas dryer, LG says d80 can also mean too little gas is reaching the dryer: never work on the gas line yourself. If you smell gas, leave the home and call the gas utility from outside.

What each number means

Code Exhaust restriction (LG) Start with
d75 75 percent Lint screen and the duct behind the dryer
d80 80 percent (on gas models, possibly low gas supply) Lint screen, duct, outside flap
d90 90 percent The whole run, including inside the wall
d95 95 percent Stop using the dryer until the vent is cleared

The higher the number, the less air is getting out. At d90 or d95, do not stop at the lint screen: check the duct, the outside hood and the run in the wall.

The four places LG says to check

1. Inside the dryer

  • Remove lint from the lint screen between every load.
  • Wash the screen with warm water and a soft brush now and then, and let it dry before you put it back.
  • Dry smaller loads.

2. Behind the dryer

Unplug the dryer and pull it out. Look at the duct between the dryer and the wall: LG says a crushed or damaged duct blocks air too. Check for dents, kinks, holes and loose joints, and note what the duct is made of.

3. Outside the home

Find the vent hood on the outside wall. With the dryer running, the flaps should open fully. Clear any lint you can see at the opening, and check that nothing (a nest, snow, a plant) is blocking it.

4. Inside the walls

The part you cannot see is the run inside the wall or ceiling. LG says long runs and runs with several elbows can cause problems, and recommends a dryer duct cleaning company for this section.

If the duct itself is the problem

LG says to avoid plastic or vinyl ducting and use 4-inch rigid or semi-rigid metal duct. The CPSC gives the same advice: replace plastic or foil accordion duct with rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal. Keep it as short and straight as the space allows, in a straight line or a gentle S curve, never squashed behind the dryer.

LG’s venting page also sets a maximum duct length that shrinks with each 90-degree elbow, and says to use no more than four elbows. The exact lengths are in your dryer’s installation instructions; check them before you add a run.

Keep the code from coming back

  • Every load: empty the lint screen. The CPSC and the U.S. Fire Administration both say before or after each load.
  • Watch for slow drying. The CPSC says damp clothes or longer drying times can mean a blocked screen or duct.
  • Plug the dryer straight into the wall. The U.S. Fire Administration says not to use an extension cord with a major appliance.
  • Gas dryers: have them inspected every year, as the U.S. Fire Administration’s report advises.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep using my LG dryer with a d80 code?

The code is a warning that the exhaust is restricted, and a restricted vent dries slowly and runs hot. The U.S. Fire Administration names failure to clean as the leading factor in home dryer fires. Clear the vent before you keep using the dryer.

Why does my gas LG dryer show d80 when the vent is clean?

LG says that on gas dryers a d80 code may also indicate a lack of gas supplied to the unit. Do not try to work on the gas connection yourself. If you smell gas, leave the home and call your gas utility from outside; otherwise call a qualified technician.

What kind of vent hose should an LG dryer have?

LG says to avoid plastic or vinyl ducting and use 4-inch rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, kept straight or in a gentle S curve with no kinks or crushed sections. Long runs and many elbows restrict airflow, so check the maximum length in your dryer's installation instructions.
