LG Washer LE Error: Motor Code, Safe Resets and When to Call
What the LE code means on LG front-load and top-load washers, the resets LG gives (they differ by page), what to check in the drum, and when it needs service.

LG washerLE
LE on an LG washer is a motor code: on front-load models LG says the tub failed to spin, and its older list calls it an overloaded or locked motor. LG’s home steps: unplug the washer and wait, reduce the load, and remove coins or other objects from the drum. If LE keeps returning, LG says to contact service.
LE is one of the LG codes where LG’s own pages do not agree word for word, so it helps to know which washer you have and which page you are reading.
What LE means, by model
| Washer and source | What LG says | LG’s home step |
|---|---|---|
| Front-load (newer code list) | The tub fails to spin | Unplug, wait 5 minutes, try again |
| Older combined code list | Motor overloaded or locked | Rest 30 minutes to cool, then restart |
| Top-load (code list) | Rotation error, shown as AE, LE or LE1 | Remove objects between wash plate and drum |
The waits differ, but the idea is the same: give the motor a rest after an overload, then try a lighter load. Waiting the longer time costs nothing.
Step 1: power off and wait
Turn the washer off and unplug it. Wait at least 5 minutes, or 30 if the washer has been running long cycles, then plug it back in and start a cycle. If the code does not return, the cause was most likely an overloaded drum.
Step 2: lighten the load
LG’s front-load list says to reduce the load size, or use the bedding cycle for heavy items. A drum packed with towels or one waterlogged comforter is heavy enough to stall the motor’s start. Split the load in two.

Step 3: check for something jammed
LG says to remove coins and other objects from the tub. On top-load models LG is specific: look between the wash plate and the drum, and pick out anything trapped there with tweezers. A coin, a bra wire or a hair clip in that gap can stop the plate from turning.
Safety
Unplug the washer before you reach into the drum or under the wash plate. Do not try to turn the drum by force or take the wash plate off.
When to call LG service
If LE comes back after a rest, a lighter load and a clean drum, LG’s front-load list is clear: unplug the power cord and contact the LG service center. LE points at the motor system, which means the motor, its sensor or its wiring. Those are inside the cabinet and wired to the mains, so this is a technician repair, not a part to order on a guess.
Before you call, note:
- the exact code (LE, LE1 or AE),
- your model and serial number (where to find them),
- whether it happens with every load or only large ones,
- any grinding, clunking or burning smell.
A burning smell is a reason to stop using the washer and leave it unplugged until a technician has seen it.
If the washer may still be under warranty, contact LG before anyone opens it, and check the warranty terms in your owner’s manual. Have the model and serial number ready when you call; a repair booked through LG starts with those two numbers.
Codes people confuse with LE
- UE: the load is unbalanced. The drum turns, but the washer will not go to full spin.
- OE: the washer cannot drain, so it will not spin with water in the drum.
- dE: the door is not closed or locked. LG’s front-load list says to open and close the door, then reset.
The full table is on the LG washer code list.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fix an LE error on an LG washer myself?
You can try LG's home steps: unplug the washer, wait, reduce the load and remove coins or other objects from the drum. If LE keeps coming back, LG says to unplug the washer and contact its service center. The fault is in the motor system, which is a technician repair.
How long should I leave my LG washer unplugged for an LE code?
LG's pages differ. Its newer front-load code list says to unplug for 5 minutes and try again; its older combined code list says to let the washer rest for 30 minutes to cool down. Waiting the longer time does no harm.
Is AE a leak code on an LG washer?
It depends on the model. On LG front-load washers, AE is a leakage code. On LG's top-load code list, AE is grouped with LE and LE1 as a rotation error. Check which type of washer you have before you look up the code.
