F9 E1 on a Whirlpool or Maytag front-load washer means the washer is unable to drain correctly. Whirlpool’s checks: the drain hose no more than 4.5 inches into the drainpipe, never taped, and no higher than 96 inches; then clean the drain pump filter and the small drain holes in the door seal.

Maytag’s help page gives F9 E1 the same meaning and the same steps, so this page applies to both brands. Some Whirlpool front-load washers show a drain fault as F21 instead.

Step 1: the drain hose

Pull the washer forward far enough to see the hose and the drainpipe or laundry tub it drains into. Whirlpool’s rules:

  • No more than 4.5 inches (113 mm) into the drainpipe or tub.
  • Loose but secure, never taped. Whirlpool says not to seal the hose into the pipe with tape: it needs a gap for air.
  • No higher than 96 inches from the bottom of the washer.
  • No kinks along the run behind the washer.

After a washer has been moved, check the hose behind it before anything else.

Step 2: the drain pump filter

Safety

Unplug the washer before you open the filter. The filter holds back the water left in the drum, so put towels and a shallow pan on the floor first, and let a hot wash cool down.

Whirlpool says the drain pump filter is behind the bottom dispenser drawer on some models, and that the location varies, so check your owner’s manual. Open it slowly to let the water out into the pan, then remove lint, coins, buttons and anything else caught in it. Refit it firmly so it does not leak on the next wash.

Step 3: the door seal drain holes

Whirlpool also says to clean the small drain holes inside the door seal. Pull the fold of the rubber seal back and clear lint and hair from the holes at the bottom.

If your washer shows F21 instead

Some Whirlpool front-load washers report a drain fault as F21. Whirlpool’s F21 page gives a shorter version of the same checks: look along the drain hose for kinks or clogs, then reset the washer by unplugging it for 5 minutes. If F21 comes back, Whirlpool says to call for service. The hose depth, air gap and filter steps above apply just as well.

Why the hose rules matter

All three hose rules come from the same idea: the washer’s pump has to push water up and out, and air has to get into the drainpipe behind it. A hose taped tight into the pipe, or a run higher than the pump is built for, makes the pump work against a seal or a column of water, and the drain takes longer than the washer allows before it reports F9 E1. Whirlpool’s fill-code page adds the other side: a standpipe lower than 39 inches lets water flow out by gravity while the washer is filling.

Step 4: restart, then service

Clear the code and run a drain and spin. Whirlpool’s general step to clear a code on its front-load washers is to press Pause/Cancel twice, then Power once. If F9 E1 comes back after the hose, filter and seal checks, Whirlpool says to schedule service.

If a technician confirms the drain pump, the part has to match your model number, which Whirlpool prints on a label inside the washer door, on the rim of the opening (more on finding it).

Other F# E# Unplug for 5 minutes; service if it persists

Frequently asked questions

Does Maytag use the same F9 E1 code as Whirlpool?

Yes. Maytag's own help page for front-load washers gives F9 E1 the same meaning, the washer is unable to drain correctly, with the same 4.5-inch drain hose limit, the air gap, the drain pump filter on some models and the door seal drain holes.

How do I clear an F9 E1 code on a Whirlpool washer?

Fix the drain problem first. Whirlpool's general step to clear a code on its front-load washers is to press Pause/Cancel twice and then Power once. For F# E# codes that return, Whirlpool says to unplug the washer for 5 minutes and, if the code persists, contact service.

What is F21 on an older Whirlpool washer?

On Whirlpool front-load models that use it, F21 indicates a drain problem. Whirlpool's steps are to check the drain hose for kinks or clogs and reset the washer by unplugging it for 5 minutes, then call for service if it continues.
