Samsung Washer SUd Code: Too Many Suds and How to Stop It

What SUd, 5Ud, Sd and 5d mean on a Samsung washer, why the cycle pauses, how much detergent to use, and how to clear leftover suds with empty cycles.

Samsung washerSUd

SUd on a Samsung washer means it has detected too many suds. Samsung says the washer pauses for a short time to let them settle, then carries on with the cycle by itself, and that the code does not mean service is needed. The cause is detergent: use HE detergent only, and no more than the maximum line.

Depending on the display, Samsung writes the same code as 5Ud, Sd, 5d, SUdS or 5Ud5. A 5 in place of an S is the same letter on a segment display.

Why the washer pauses

High-efficiency washers wash in a small amount of water, which is why makers ask for HE detergent. When the washer senses too much foam, it stops so the suds can break down. Samsung says the cycle then continues automatically, so the wash may finish later than the display first showed.

What to change

Measure the dose; pouring until it looks right is how SUd starts.

Samsung says the code is caused by incorrect use of detergent. Its leak guide gives the rules:

  • Use HE detergent only. High-efficiency detergent is made for low-water washers. Look for the HE symbol on the bottle.
  • Stay within the maximum fill line of the detergent drawer.
  • Measure. Use the detergent maker’s dose for your load size rather than filling the drawer.
  • One detergent at a time. A pod in the drum plus liquid in the drawer is a double dose.

Whirlpool gives the same advice for its own suds code: HE detergent only, in the maker’s recommended amount, and no extra when a bulk dispenser is already dosing.

Clearing suds left in the washer

Leftover detergent can keep making suds for a wash or two after you cut the dose. Samsung’s step for this, from its leak and water-level codes, is simple: run an empty cycle with no detergent or additives, and keep running empty cycles until no suds appear.

Clean the detergent drawer while you are at it: pull it out, rinse out the gel and residue, and let it dry before you slide it back.

The same code on other brands

Brand Code What the maker says
Samsung SUd, 5Ud, Sd, 5d Pauses for the suds to settle, then continues; caused by incorrect detergent use
LG Sud Detects too many suds and adds a suds-reducing cycle; use no more detergent than recommended
Whirlpool Sud, Sd, F0 E2 Runs a suds-reduction routine; use HE detergent in the recommended amount

When SUd comes with other symptoms

SUd alone is a detergent problem. Call for service if you see:

  • water on the floor that continues after you have cut back the detergent (Samsung’s leak codes LE and LC are a separate fault),
  • SUd on every load even with HE detergent at a low dose,
  • the washer stopping and not resuming after the pause,
  • a burning smell or a grinding noise along with the code.

Good to know

If suds are still in the drum when the cycle ends, run a rinse and spin before you take the laundry out. That is Whirlpool’s advice for its own suds code, and an extra rinse does no harm on any washer.

Other Samsung codes that start like a suds problem

  • Ub or UE: the load is unbalanced.
  • 5C, 5E or nd: a drain code. Samsung says water is not draining at the right speed, or at all.
  • 4C: water is not getting into the washer.
  • OE, 0E, OC or 0C: Samsung says there is too much water in the washer.

All of them are in the Samsung washer code list.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stop the washer when it shows SUd?

No. Samsung says the washer stops for a short time to let the suds die down and then continues the cycle by itself. Let it finish, then change the detergent before the next load.

Can SUd damage a Samsung washer?

Samsung says the code does not mean service is needed. Too many suds can push water and foam where they do not belong, though: Samsung's leak guide lists using HE detergent and staying within the max fill line among the checks for a leaking washer.

Does SUd mean the same thing on other brands?

Similar codes exist. LG shows Sud and adds a suds-removing cycle, and Whirlpool front-load washers show Sud, Sd or F0 E2 for excess suds. Each brand's fix is the same idea: the right detergent, in the right amount.
