Samsung Washer Error Codes: Every Code Family and Its Fix
Samsung washer error codes grouped the way Samsung groups them: 4C water supply, 5C drain, SUd suds, Ub balance, dC door, LC leak and more, with the fixes.

Samsung washer codes come in families: one fault can show as different codes depending on the model. The ones people see most are 4C or 4E (water is not getting in), 5C or nd (not draining), SUd (too many suds) and Ub or UE (unbalanced load). Each has checks you can make before you request service.
Samsung’s own code page groups codes this way and repeats one warning: some codes mean different things on different models, so check the user manual for your model number (where to find it) when in doubt.
Samsung washer code families
| Codes | What Samsung says | First step |
|---|---|---|
| 4C, 4E, nF, 1 4C | Water is not entering correctly | Hoses, valves, drain hose depth, inlet filters (4C page) |
| 4C2, 4E2, CE, nF1 | Cold supply is extremely hot: hoses swapped | Connect red to hot, blue to cold. Not a service fault |
| 5C, 5E, SE, nd, 1 5C | Not draining at the right speed, or at all | Level the washer, drain hose, pump filter (front-load) |
| OE, 0E, OC, 0C | Too much water in the washer | Samsung points to its drain checks |
| SUd, 5Ud, Sd, 5d | Too many suds; washer pauses and continues | Less HE detergent (SUd page). Not a service fault |
| Ub, UE, U6, Ur, dc | Load unbalanced (dc is a door code on some models) | Untangle and rearrange, press Start (Ub page) |
| dS, dE, dC, dL, FL, LO | Door not detected as closed and locked | Check the latch and that no laundry is caught |
| 1E, 1C, LE, LC | Moisture where it should not be, or a water level sensor fault | Look for a leak and kinked hoses; run empty cycles if suds |
| 3E, 3C, E3 | Motor (a voltage code on some models) | Power off 2 to 3 minutes, restart; service if it continues |
| HE, HC | Heater | Power off 2 to 3 minutes, restart; service if it continues |
| tE, tC | Temperature sensor | Power off 2 to 3 minutes, restart; service if it continues |
| Cb | Calibration mode, not a fault | Let it finish |
| dn | Downloading an update (about 15 minutes) | Wait; service if it shows over 30 minutes |
Water in: the 4C family
A Samsung washer that cannot fill shows 4C, 4E or nF. Samsung’s checks are all outside the cabinet: hot and cold hoses on the right inlets and not kinked, both valves fully open, the drain hose 6 to 8 inches into the drainpipe (deeper siphons the water away), a one-minute power reset, and clean inlet filters. Samsung also says not to use Flood Safe hoses. The full steps are on the 4C page.
Water out: the 5C family
5C, 5E or nd means water is not draining fast enough. Samsung’s drain guide:
- Turn the washer off and make sure it is level.
- Check the drain hose: 6 to 8 inches into the standpipe or sink, secured, not airtight, not kinked, and between 18 and 96 inches high (24 to 35 inches for a sink), with no extension.
- On a front-load washer, clean the pump filter. Samsung says to do this monthly or every 40 washes.
- Turn the washer on and start a cycle. It should drain at the start. If it does not, request service.
Top-load Samsung washers have no pump filter for you to clean, so after the hose check the next step is service.

Samsung groups its leak codes with its water level sensor codes: moisture is being detected somewhere it does not belong, or the sensor itself has a problem. Its steps are to look for a leak and fix it, check the hoses behind the washer, and run an empty cycle with no additives, repeating while suds appear. Samsung adds a point that is easy to miss: do not remove the screw that holds the drain hose holder, because without it the washer can drain by itself and show LC or 4C.
Safety
If there is water on the floor, switch off the washer’s circuit at the breaker before you step into it, then unplug it. Do not open the washer’s cabinet to look for the leak. If no suds appear and the leak code continues, Samsung says to request service.
Codes that go to service
Motor (3E, 3C), heater (HE, HC) and temperature sensor (tE, tC) codes have no home check beyond a restart. Samsung’s step for each is to switch the washer off for 2 to 3 minutes, switch it on and restart the cycle, then request service if the code continues. Have the exact code and the model number ready.

Codes that are not faults
Several Samsung displays are status messages rather than errors. Samsung lists Cb or C6 as calibration mode, dn as a software download that takes about 15 minutes (request service only if it shows for over 30 minutes), and CL as Child Lock having drained the tub. FlexWash models can show 1dC4 when the rubber button beside the upper washer latch is missing; Samsung says no service is needed for that one. If your code is a status message, let the washer finish what it is doing. For Samsung dishwasher codes, see Samsung dishwasher LC, and for refrigerators, Samsung refrigerator codes. The Samsung hub has all three.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Samsung washer show a different code from the one in the manual?
Samsung uses several codes for the same fault depending on the model and display: a fill fault can show as 4C, 4E, nF or 1 4C. Samsung groups them into families on its code page and says to check the user manual where one code means different things on different models.
How do I clear a Samsung washer error code?
Fix the cause first, then restart the cycle. For codes without a home check, such as motor, heater or sensor codes, Samsung's step is to switch the washer off for 2 to 3 minutes, switch it on and restart; if the code continues, request service.
What does CL mean on a Samsung washer?
Samsung lists CL as Child Lock having drained the tub. If the door is not closed within 30 seconds while Child Lock is on and there is water in the tub, Samsung says the washer drains, and a door code can appear.
